Our Story

Psalm 104:14-15

How many are your works O, Lord!

14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth: 15 wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil that makes his face to shine, and bread that sustains his heart.

Embedded in History, the Judeo-Christian faith, education, and fraternity, has always been kept together with wine. Biblically, wine has always been part of every feast or celebration, and today has been one of the oldest traditions in different corners of the globe.

“Each grape will lose its life, but each will rise again in beautiful colors of pink and red and gold” – Father Charles de Pierre, (1986)

With the religious affiliation and importance of wine in the Christian faith, the blessing of grapes has been conducted at the beginning of the harvest season for many centuries all over the world. This tradition originated in Europe centuries ago and has been adapted into Napa Valley by Grgich Hills in 1977, with many wineries in Napa Valley continuing afterwards. One such example is the Robert Mondavi Winery, which had their first batch of chardonnay grapes blessed with holy water and incense by Father Charles de Pierre, who wore a 200-year-old vestment made of Philippine silk, in Oakville, California, 1986.

The origins of wine production in Mont La Salle Vineyards started in 1882, when the Christian Brothers began a wine business in Martinez, California. They specialized in altar and medicinal wines for decades and in 1930, they decided to move their production and continue their wine business in Martinez to a property they purchased by the name of Mont La Salle. To this day, the Christian Brothers are considered the oldest wine producers in Napa Valley, and a plaque of the history of the Mont La Salle Vineyards, created in 1982 and unveiled by wine makers Brother Timothy and Humbug Loren Wilson, can be found on display at the Christian Brothers Retreat and Conference center in Napa Valley. Today, one of the wine brands of the Christian brothers, Brother Timothy Wines, are being celebrated for charity every year.

Napawinesph started with a religious pilgrimage in Mount Vedeer, Napa Valley.

Our Wine Story begins in 2007, when De La Salle Alumni Businessman Glenn Ramos Gatuslao, M.E. who served then as the President of The University of Saint La Salle (USLS) Alumni Manila Chapter, made a promise to visit his retired, childhood Christian Brother friend, Brother Felix Mason – F.S.C., who was set to leave for Mont La Salle in Napa Valley, California, to spend the last years of his life. Said promise, however, was unfulfilled when Bro. Felix passed away in 2008. Nevertheless, in 2015, Glenn, finally decided to visit Bro. Felix’s tombstone at the Brothers Cemetery, located just 200 meters away from the main building of Mont La Salle.

Seeing the breathtaking views of De La Salle’s 900-acre vineyards, started his wine tasting journey. His visit to the Hess, Robert Mondavi, V. Sattui, Castello de Amorosa, Beringer, Grgich Hills and other smaller wineries with his La Sallian Business Development Manager Cristine Catu, made him understand the difference of Napa Wines in comparison to Old World wines, wines vinted in other counties in California, and other wine making States in the USA.

In 2017, Glenn and Cristine went back to Napa, this time to find the best winery where a Phil-Hispanic labelled wine, with the Philippines’ 3 stars & Sun & the Spanish lion on it may be produced. Sharing his concept, caught the interest of his rich Fil-Am lawyer, Abe Marapao, who shared the same passion for fine wines. Two years later, Glenn, and his California based son Ryan, while having dinner in Glendale, CA, were surprised by Abe, when he showed him the first bottle of Napa De Oro, coming from Napa Valley with the Philippines’ 3 stars and sun on the label. The wine brand (Napa de Oro) has 7 varietals, from Rose’, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Red (Bordeaux style) blend.

In this website, you will have a chance to purchase some of these Napa Wine Collections for your special occasions.
